An editor that
AI CLIs can drive.
A Windows 10 or 11 code editor on Tauri 2, Rust, and React. About 9.5 MB on disk. An MCP server on port 9222 lets Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, or opencode drive the window.
Site and editor are open source. Apache-2.0. No account.

Screenshots
The real window, not a mockup.
Every shot below is an actual capture of Zephyr running on Windows. Filter by surface to see how the editor, terminal, git, agents, and MCP fit together.
Features
Six parts that had to work together, so they do.
Editor
Encoding detection for UTF-8, BOM, Windows-1252, UTF-16 LE and BE
Multi-file tabs, session restore, and split groups
Regex find and replace with a step cap, multiple cursors, code actions
Toolkit
More built in. No plugin required.
LSP
Per-language completion, hover, rename, and format. A language server starts when you open a file and stops after it goes idle.
Debugger
DAP with breakpoints, stepping, watch expressions, and a call stack.
Snippets
Reusable insertions, scoped per language.
Skills and memory
Plain files under %APPDATA% that the agent can call. No database, no migration.
Tasks
Detects build and test commands from the project, then runs them without you hunting for the right incantation.
Command palette
Every action in one list, virtualized so a large command set still opens instantly.
Quick Open
Fuzzy file search across the whole workspace, driven from the keyboard.
Extensions
Bundled packs plus Open VSX .vsix install. Static contributions only, so extension JavaScript never runs.
Timeline
File history with snapshots and restore.
Zen mode
Editor only. Everything else moves out of the way.
Screen reader mode
Reduced motion, forced high contrast, and visible focus rings throughout the window.
Tiny footprint
About 9.5 MB on disk. No Electron, no bundled Chromium, no always-on extension host.

Pick a build. Run it.
Windows 10 or 11 is the tested target and every Windows build is the officially supported one. The Linux AppImage and .deb builds are community-supported and experimental. No account, no telemetry. Signed releases on GitHub, and the app verifies the signature before it updates.
Windows

Zephyr_1.1.11_x64-setup.exe
- Recommended for most people

- Downloadx86_64MSI installer
Zephyr_1.1.11_x64_en-US.msi
- For managed or fleet deployments
- Same signed build as the NSIS installer
The tested target. Fixes are built and verified on Windows first.
Linux
Experimental community build- DownloadAppImagex86_64
Zephyr_1.1.11_amd64.AppImage
- chmod +x, then run
- No install step required
- Download.debDebian / Ubuntu
Zephyr_1.1.11_amd64.deb
- Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives
- Installs system-wide
Not the tested target. Builds are best-effort, and issues are best filed against Windows.
Signed releases live on GitHub. The app verifies the minisign signature before it installs an update.

Install
Three steps and you are in.
Windows 10 or 11. WebView2 already ships with Windows 11, so on a fresh machine it usually just runs.
- 1
Download the installer
Grab the .exe or .msi from the download table above, or open the releases page directly.
- 2
Run it
SmartScreen may warn because the build is not signed with a paid certificate. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
- 3
Open a folder
Zephyr opens. Use Open Folder to load a project. Settings, keys, extensions, and logs live under %APPDATA%\zephyr — delete that folder for a full reset.
FAQ
Questions, answered plainly.
Neither. It is built from scratch on Tauri 2, React, and Rust. The renderer uses WebView2, which already ships with Windows, so no Chromium is bundled. That bundled Chromium is exactly where Electron's size and memory come from.
There is no always-on extension host and no bundled browser. A language server starts when you open a file of that type and shuts down after it goes idle, so you pay only for the languages you are actually editing.
Through Open VSX or a manual .vsix. Version 1 supports static contributions: languages, themes, snippets, keymaps, and command palette entries. Extension JavaScript is never executed, so extensions that need the full extension host do not work yet.
Over the MCP server on port 9222: HTTP JSON-RPC with a Bearer token, loopback only. Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, or opencode can open files, read terminal panes, and change editor buffers. editor_write only touches the buffer, so you save manually and a wrong edit never changes the file on disk.
Under %APPDATA%\zephyr\: settings, history, extensions, and logs. API keys are obfuscated with XOR and a BLAKE3 key, which is not real encryption. There is no telemetry, no analytics, and no crash reporting. Delete that folder for a full reset.
The installer is not signed with a paid code-signing certificate, so Windows shows a warning. The source is open and can be read in the GitHub repo. If you would rather build it yourself: install Node and Rust, then run npm install and npm run tauri build.
Yes, from 1.1.1 onward. Open Settings, then About, then Check for updates. The app verifies the release signature before it installs. Version 1.1.0 has no update endpoint and needs a manual install.
Windows 10 and 11 are the primary supported target. WebView2 already ships with Windows 11, so the installer usually just runs. Linux AppImage and .deb are published as experimental community builds, not the tested target. There is no macOS build.
Open a folder and let an agent take the first pass.
Register Zephyr with your CLI in one click, or download the installer and start typing. The source is open either way.
